Living on a border town, she learned how to take care of herself and how to defend herself very early on. She knew how to recognize someone who might be dangerous to her versus someone who she could trust very quickly. It was necessary if she wanted to live. Crime and murder were parts of her daily life. Drug turf wars broke out often enough that as soon as the sun started setting, she was told to run straight home. It wasn't the ideal life, but it was a life that she knew she had. She considered herself lucky as a kid. Her parents, Maria Jose and Alvaro Juarez, were fairly well off. However, she's the middle child out of a family of eight children. Her parents are Catholic, and Orthodox at that, so the idea of birth control was seriously out of the question. So even though they were fairly well off, for the size of their family, they had to cut back in every way possible to make it. Carmen herself was home schooled until she was six, when her mother was forced to take a part time job as a receptionist at a somewhat shady agency near the border between Mexico and Texas, particularly El Paso. Then she and two of her older siblings attended school. She was never allowed to walk by herself, and she always left home with her older brother at her side. In these days, from when she was six until about ten years old, she rarely saw her mother or her father. Her father was working, though she never really knew what he did exactly. Any time she questioned it, her mother casually changed the subject, making it impossible for her to know what her mother would have said. Her mother worked long hours, from seven in the morning until after night fall. As their area of Ciudad Juarez was often dangerous, Carmen and her siblings were never allowed outside after dark and were told to always lock the doors and stay away from the windows. She often did her homework by protected candle light in her bedroom with her siblings, waiting eagerly for when her parents would come home. She learned early on how to cook with limited options and chose to take on the responsibility of making sure that her younger siblings were fed well. When she turned eleven, the unthinkable happened. She'd recently received an exciting note in school and was waiting up for her mother to come home from work to share the news, but her mother never came home. Her father reported the next day that something had happened, and the children had to leave, immediately. Not understanding what was going on, they were told each that they could bring one backpack of belongings, and to not look back as they left the house. She'd wanted to obey her father, she really did. But as the children were ushered into the back of a covered truck, Carmen looked back and to this day she regrets doing so. Her mother had been...murdered, and she'd looked on time to see the gun shot that ended her father's life, as well. They were going to stay with her aunt and uncle in Reno, Nevada. Eleven years old, essentially an illegal immigrant. She was allowed legally to enroll in school through some quick thinking from her aunt and declaring her and her siblings as their children. Thus, she became Carmen Eliana Torres, rather than maintaining her father's last name of Juarez. Yeah, this was going to turn out well! Her aunt and uncle, thinking quickly, worked out some technically illegal documentation to allow her to remain in the US. As a child, she knew that to fit in she had to learn to speak English and without an accent. So, from when she was eleven until from when she was about thirteen or so, Carmen studied. She studied by herself in the school library. She studied with her classmates, speaking more and more to them once she realized she could speak English decently. When she'd first gotten there, in Reno, she refused to speak much, not wanting to show off or to stand out from the crowd much. But there was one image that constantly remained in Carmen's mind, one that she was glad that her siblings, as far as she knew, hadn't seen. Her parents, both of them, murdered in cold blood. It wasn't until she started attending high school that Carmen wondered what her father really had done with his life. Had he gotten involved with the drug wars, and was that why they'd been targeted? It would have made sense, but she wasn't so sure and liked to believe better of her parents. But the more she thought about it as she got older, the more it made sense, and the more determined that Carmen became to prevent that from happening to someone else. In her freshman year of high school in Reno, Carmen began investigating what she needed in order to achieve a career in law enforcement of some kind. She wasn't the best fighter nor the quickest to react. Her skills remained with science and math. Thus, her search lead her to a forensic scientist. Carefully selecting UNLV as her university, Carmen attended from when she was 18 and graduated one year early, leaving the program successfully when she was only 21 with a near perfect score. Having double majored in biology and chemistry, she felt that she was more than prepared. So she took the first job offer that opened up for her: a part-time position at a lab in Los Angeles, California. She passed all the qualifying tests and thought that it was the perfect opportunity to work with her chosen career. However, a few months into the job, Carmen felt she wasn't fully ready for it. The job was taxing, requiring her to be at arms at all times, asking that she visit the crime scenes directly and everything else. She got too involved in some cases, being tailed by some suspects. She got involved in some shady business trying to make ends meet and send money home to her aunt and uncle, as well, but she knew she didn't want to go down the same path as her father, no matter how easy it was for the money to come. It was enough to make her move back to Las Vegas, Nevada. She entered UNLV's master's program for criminal justice when she turned twenty two, wanting to understand more about the other side of the system. She graduated when she was twenty five, with a master's in criminal justice as well as a Master of Science in Chemistry. Feeling more sure of herself and her career, Carmen decided to try to look for a job near Las Vegas. She worked full time in Reno for a short while, then just this year when she turned 26 moved back to Las Vegas, accepting a full time crime lab position with Las Vegas' police department. It was when she moved back to Las Vegas that she first began to hear the unusual voice inside of her head, that of a man no less. She doesn't really understand what's going on, and is a bit paranoid about it, but she's curious about it. Alter: Lois Lane. We know her as the epic love interest to Superman, aka Clark Kent. There is, though, more to her character than just that tidbit. Lois grew up as the daughter of General Sam Lane and was raised as a military brat. She moved around with her father and younger sister, Lucy Lane, between military bases as a child. Her mother died when she was young, so it was up to Lois to raise Lucy for much of the time, and Lois took on quite a bit of responsibility as a young girl. In later issues of the original Superman comics, Lois also attended an all-girls' camp during one summer. It was at this camp where Lois first met Lana Lang, who would later become a rival love-interest for Lois with Clark. When she entered high school, Lois won a contest sponsored by the Daily Planet and was given the opportunity to go visit Metropolis. It was here that Lois first met Clark Kent, who was the other winner of the contest. Competitive by nature and wanting to put her name out there, Lois egged Clark into a contest of their own during the trip to see who could find the greatest number of news scoops while they were in Metropolis. This is where, also, Lois learned that Clark is from Smallville, a town not unlike her own home town. She later graduated from Raleigh College with a degree in journalism and accepted a position as a reporter with the Daily Planet. Her career was fast-paced and Lois became known as a hard-hitting reporter. Imagine her surprise when she later discovered that Clark Kent also became a reporter with the Daily Planet, along with other well-known names in the Superman fandom. As for Lois' personality, she's ambitious and adventurous. She's also skilled in martial arts and has above average military background knowledge that she uses to her advantage most of the time in regards to getting her stories. Lois is also very independent and doesn't feel the need to be "saved" by the hero, but would rather save herself in any given situation. Lois appreciates Carmen's determination and responsibility, but she's not quite sure about her. Carmen does have a darker edge to her that Lois would never understand or accept. Lois also is unsure how much religion plays into Carmen's actions. So, for now, Lois is wary of Carmen, but she can certainly see the benefits of having someone on the side of the law as her head partner. At least this way, too, she can get more stories even if they are from another world! Lois will come from about a year or two into after she became a reporter with the Daily Planet. Journal/Key: (What does your character/Alter's journal and key look like? Very brief, 2-3 sentences.) The journal is a small black book, almost like a daily agenda that one might keep. The key is a lighter with a flame on the side of it. Storylines; (Three storylines that can be filled by other characters in play. These can be open storylines for characters or for Alters. For example, your character can have a storyline for their biological sister or for their Alter’s spouse. Must be open upon character’s introduction into the game, not pre-filled!) Open: Lucy Lane, Lois' younger sister! Open: Any other DC comic characters are most welcome! Open: Former classmates or current work companions of Carmen's. Open: Carmen's siblings. There's 7 of them of all ages and genders (I left it wide open!) so take your pick! Open: The men responsible for killing Carmen's parents. Probably would be some kind of gang, preferably from Mexico, but Carmen wouldn't know that yet. She was only eleven when she saw them killed, so she didn't really understand everything that had happened yet. | ||||||||||
